EXCERPT: "The County of San Diego OSAR program has issued an urgent public health alert about medetomidine detected in the San Diego County illegal drug supply.
Medetomidine, also known as rhino tranq, mede, or dex, is not approved for human use and poses a risk of severe withdrawal and overdose symptoms.
Naloxone does not reverse medetomidine effects, but because fentanyl is involved in most related overdoses, naloxone should be administered to restore normal breathing.
Clinicians and first responders are advised to administer naloxone for any suspected overdose and to consider targeted toxicology testing when clinically indicated.
